Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about the process, confidentiality, and sessions.
What is Mental Health Counselling?
Mental health counselling is a therapeutic process in which a qualified professional supports a person to better understand themselves, manage emotional difficulties, and develop healthy ways of coping with everyday life.
When should I seek help from a psychologist?
When you feel a situation is overwhelming you, when anxiety, sadness, or anger affect your life, relationships, or work. You don't have to reach an "extreme" point to ask for help.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?
A psychologist is a scientist with a degree in psychology. A psychotherapist has additional training in a specific therapeutic approach. The two often overlap — as in my case, where I am both a psychologist and a psychotherapist.
What happens in the first session?
In the first session we get to know each other. We discuss what brings you here, your concerns, and your goals. I explain my approach and answer your questions. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the topic and on you. Some issues respond well to short interventions (8-12 sessions), while others require more long-term work. We review progress at regular intervals.
Are sessions confidential?
Absolutely. I am bound by the code of ethics of the psychological profession and professional confidentiality. Whatever you share in sessions stays between us, with minimal legal exceptions.
Will the psychologist tell me what to do?
Not as "instructions". We work together so that you discover what fits you best. My role is to help you see more clearly, process emotions, and make decisions that are authentic to you.
How does individual counselling differ from group?
Individual offers personalised attention and full privacy. Group offers the experience of shared journeys with others. I focus on individual sessions.
Are online sessions available?
Yes. I offer sessions via Webex, Microsoft Teams, and other secure platforms. The quality of work remains the same.
How do I choose the right professional for me?
Look for a professional with recognised qualifications and the right specialisation. More importantly: trust your feeling after the first session — the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful tool.
